THE LUMEN, NEW CRITERIA CHOICE BULBS LOW CONSUMPTION

Want to buy your future energy-saving bulbs? The lumen becomes the new selection criteria. Explanations!

LUMEN WATT VERSUS: A FUNDAMENTAL CHANGE TO UNDERSTAND

The lumen (pronounced "Lumene") is the unit of measurement of luminous flux of lighting. Its symbol on the boxes of bulbs is: lm. Example: 400 lm.

It is now the criterion for choosing your bulbs and your spots with the desired light intensity.

WHY THE CHANGE?

We used to choose our conventional bulbs based on the number of watts (W). More powerful lighting we wanted, needed more watts. For example, light bulbs 40W, 60W or 100W.

Since 2006, LED bulbs have tripled in energy efficiency and have caught up with energy saving bulbs (called eco) who proposed a first effective alternative to conventional light bulbs to energy-intensive.

Given this shift towards greater energy efficiency:

the power consumption in watts is not a significant criterion. What matters is the light output, that is to say the ratio of lumens and watts products "consumed" by the bulb: lm / Watt.
lumen allows to more easily compare the light output of the bulbs of different techniques.
